The National Association of Colleges and Employers projects employers will hire about 4% more interns in 2026 following a sharp decline the year before, but conversion into full-time offers remains uneven, and students report growing pressure to demonstrate skills AI can't easily replicate.
Career coaches are advising students to treat internships less as resume line items and more as structured opportunities to build direct relationships with supervisors, take ownership of visible projects, and document concrete outcomes — the kind of evidence increasingly valued under skills-based hiring, which 70% of employers now use, according to NACE.
