Azerbaijan Approves New Doctoral Specialties

BAKU — Azerbaijan's Ministry of Science and Education has approved the creation of new doctoral (doktorantura) specialties, expanding the country's postgraduate research offerings. The decision, formalized through an official order, adds fields to the national classifier of doctoral specialties that institutions use to structure admissions, supervision, and dissertation defense requirements.

The move is part of a broader, ongoing effort by the Ministry to modernize Azerbaijan's advanced degree system so that it better reflects current academic and industry demand. Officials have said in past statements that specialty classifications need regular updating as new research fields — particularly in technology, data science, and interdisciplinary areas — outpace older frameworks that were not designed with them in mind.

The new specialties will affect how universities and research institutions plan doctoral admissions going forward, potentially opening research pathways in areas that previously had no formal doctoral track in Azerbaijan.
