Indiana Approves Nation's Second Workforce Pell Grant Program

WASHINGTON — The US Department of Education approved Indiana's Workforce Pell Grant program on August 19 — only the second state program of its kind nationally, extending federal Pell Grant funding to short-term job-training programs rather than restricting it to traditional degree pathways.

The approval reflects a broader federal push, following last year's expansion of Pell eligibility to short-term workforce programs under new congressional authority. But early commentary on the rollout — including from Education Week's own analysis this week — has flagged a real gap: Congress opened the funding door, but states still need to build the data systems and quality-assurance processes to determine which short-term programs actually lead to jobs, rather than just accepting federal money into programs of uneven value.
