University of São Paulo Retains Top Spot in Latin America Rankings for Second Year
SÃO PAULO — Brazil's University of São Paulo has held onto its position as the best university in Latin America for a second consecutive year, according to the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings. Brazilian universities dominate the broader list, taking seven of the top ten places overall.
Analysts point to the results as evidence of a rebound following a period of severe underfunding during the 2019–2023 presidential administration, when federal university budgets fell to levels not seen since 2005 and many academics left the country. Since roughly 90% of Brazil's published academic research is tied to publicly funded institutions, the country's standing in comparative rankings is unusually sensitive to government funding decisions — making this year's results a closely watched signal of the sector's recovery. Chile's top-ranked institution and several other regional universities also posted gains, reflecting broader momentum across Latin American higher education.
