AI Literacy Becomes Graduation Requirement in Growing Number of US Districts
NEW YORK — A growing number of US school districts and university systems are making artificial intelligence literacy mandatory. The State University of New York system adopted a formal AI policy covering all 64 campuses, embedding AI literacy into general education requirements for incoming undergraduates starting this fall.
Boston Public Schools has gone further, becoming the first major-city district in the country to make AI fluency a graduation requirement through a mandatory literacy program across its high schools.
The moves come as lawmakers in 31 US states have introduced 134 bills this year addressing AI in education, most focused on student data privacy and classroom-use restrictions. Debate continues over the pace of rollout relative to the pace of formal governance.
