Nigeria's Education Reforms Win International Praise Ahead of Global Summit
ABUJA — Nigeria's ongoing education reforms have received international recognition from Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, former president of Tanzania and chairman of the board of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), who commended the Federal Government's transformation efforts during a meeting with Nigeria's Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
Kikwete pointed to Nigeria's growing influence within the GPE specifically, noting that Alausa's position on the GPE Board reflects the country's expanding role in shaping global education policy and expanding access to quality education — a notable endorsement ahead of a major upcoming international education summit. The recognition comes as Nigeria continues a broader leadership transition in its examination system: the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which administers the country's main university entrance exam, recently marked the formal handover from longtime registrar Prof. Is-haq Oloyede — credited with a decade of reforms to the exam body — to new registrar Prof. Segun Aina.
For a country managing one of Africa's largest education systems, the international recognition offers some validation at a moment when Nigeria's education sector continues to face serious, well-documented challenges, including school security incidents and millions of out-of-school children — underscoring that reform recognition and on-the-ground crisis remain two sides of the same ongoing story.
