OECD: Generative AI's Classroom Impact Hinges on Teaching Design, Not Access Alone

PARIS — A new OECD Digital Education Outlook examines how generative AI is being used in classrooms — by students learning subject material, by teachers and students together during instruction, and by teachers alone for planning and assessment support.

The report's central finding: unlike earlier education technologies, generative AI is freely accessible and largely used outside institutional control. Without clear pedagogical guidance, the OECD warns, outsourcing tasks to AI tools can boost short-term performance without producing real learning gains.

The findings arrive as governments worldwide draft classroom AI frameworks, adding pressure on education ministries to move from general guidance toward enforceable standards.
