Singapore's Top Universities Make AI Literacy Mandatory for Every Undergraduate

SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore has announced that every incoming undergraduate will be required to complete a compulsory AI module — "Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation" — starting with the 2026-27 academic year, regardless of what they study. The requirement was unveiled August 11 alongside a new campus-wide partnership with OpenAI: from August 31, every NUS student, faculty member, and staff member gets access to ChatGPT Edu, a version built with stronger privacy and administrative controls than the free consumer product.

The mandate goes well beyond a single introductory class. Every major at NUS — from political science to business to engineering — will require at least one course examining how AI is reshaping that specific profession. More than 85% of the university's undergraduate population, spread across its largest colleges, will be affected.

NUS isn't moving alone. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore's other major research university, announced the same week that AI literacy will become mandatory for every one of its undergraduates too, with a stated goal of weaving AI into 40% of all NTU courses by 2030. Together, the two announcements mean Singapore's two flagship universities have simultaneously decided that AI competency is no longer an elective skill for computer science students — it's a baseline expectation for every graduate, in every field.
